A member of the rosewood family, the rare, expensive Dalbergia Melanoxylon (literally “Black Wood”) produces one of the densest and hardest woods in the world.
The Ancient Egyptians , who called it h'bny, fashioned precious furniture from its solid wood, whose color varies from dark purple to a brownish black – the modern word “ebony” brings to mind that distant past.
In Tanzania, the Makonde, who call it mpingo, use it to create a spectacular and particularly expensive carving of the Tree of Life.
In Grenadille d'Afrique – in French -, Alberto Morillas transforms it into an elegant olfactory sculpture.
The Fragrance : Grenadille d'Afrique
From crackling sap to balsamic resin and from smoky wood to sun-burned stone, Grenadille d’Afrique expresses not only the name of the eponymous tree, but also the primordial landscape in which it grows. Curiously described as “fossilized wood rubbed in a vanilla accord” by Alberto Morillas, this highly contrasted composition sets its dark heart with luminous notes. Is it sunset or sunrise? Sparkling bergamot captures the last rays of the sun, while a purple veil of lavender pours from the dusty moon onto the savannah grasslands… Traveling between twigs and roots with a scent of juniper sap, this olfactory portrait of the mythical African Blackwood tree is built around a “trunk” of Haitian vetiver. With its complex facets of wood, smoke, earth and flint, it is the vertical axis that brings together the vegetal, animalic and mineral notes of the fragrance. Transformed into combustible resin by a burst of amber cistus labdanum, here is vanilla exuding its balsamic warmth. Bark, soft leather and sun-warmed stone release the heat of the day into the inky night, cooled by a breeze of moss…
