It was commissioned to celebrate the reinvention of AEDES PERFUMERY and its move to 16A Orchard Street in the Lower East Side of New York City, a vibrant area that attracts a trendy and diverse crowd, where galleries, skaters, cafes and small, unique shops create crackling energy and excitement.
In 2021, it took on a deeper meaning for AEDES DE VENUSTAS founders Robert Gerstner and Karl Bradl. “Every single soul has gone through a huge change in their life,” says Gerstner. “During this time, we have rooted here, in this neighborhood that represents the business hub of New York City. Unknowingly, we have accomplished something much more important.”
Not just a smell, but a feeling. Something that feeds and then grows. "I set out to create a sense of emotional well-being through a simplistic fragrance structure," says perfumer Frank Voelkl. "The use of natural root ingredients like ginger and iris reconnect us to our earth, making us feel grounded and centered."
But rather than acknowledging a single note or fragrance category, 16A ORCHARD presents itself as a bit of a mystery. “You don’t know what to do with it right away, and that’s what makes it interesting,” Gerstner says. “You can’t put your finger on it. It teaches you to think and live outside the box.”
Earthy materials become airy in Voelkl's hands. Ginger raises questions, takes you off course. Iris brings you back into focus as it reveals cold but delicate qualities. Quince and lily of the valley amplify the roots. Dry cedarwood and cashmere-like tonka bean create a dry, spicy roundness for more fleeting notes of bergamot, lemon, cardamom and jasmine.
