Tumultuous Containment. An empathetic interpretation of pure and modern rose, combined with extracts of Sichuan pepper, geranium and fresh notes of blackcurrant.
Frederic Malle – Rose & Cuir By Jean-Claude Ellena
Year : 2019
Olfactory family : floral, leathery
Beneath the calm lies a storm: vetiver and cedar settle on a dark and mysterious base together with IsoButyl Quinoline, an incredibly bitter molecule, used in perfumery at the time of Jazz and since then forgotten.
In the foreground, an emphatic reinterpretation of the rose; pure, lean, uncompromisingly modern. Blended with a unique extraction of timut pepper, bourbon geranium and a note of cassis for freshness and spice.
Yet underneath is a quiet storm: vetiver and cedar form an earthy bed of dark, mysterious leather with quinoline isobutyl at its heart, an intensely bitter molecule largely forgotten from its use in the bold perfumery of the Jazz Age.
Master : Jean-Claude ElleneAs a disciple and close friend of the legendary Edmond Roudnitska (creator of "Le Parfum de Thérèse"), Jean-Claude Ellena began his career with a minimalist approach to perfumery. Since then, he has developed this approach into his own signature style, which is continually informed by his elegant and calm manner, and has been compared by his contemporaries to watercolour sketches and chamber music. Jean-Claude says that a perfume should be like “a soft caress; nothing should shock, nothing should shout”. Roudnitska's minimalism has never left him, however, and his compositions remain focused on a single ingredient, avoiding repetition.
Jean-Claude Ellena was born in Grasse into a family of perfumers. His training began at the age of 17, in the most prestigious laboratories – in Grasse, Paris, New York and Geneva – where he always considered himself self-taught. Jean-Claude met Frédéric Malle in Roure when he was working on "Eau au Thé Vert" for Bulgari. He composed one perfume a year for Editions de Parfums before joining Hermès. He has now returned as a full-fledged author to Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle.Top notes : geranium, Sichuan pepper, blackcurrant
Heart notes : leather, rose
Base notes : cedar, vetiver
Vittoria Profumi's advice: Sparkling and sober, it is a floral composition wrapped in a dramatic but controlled sensuality.
