1) But what's inside a lipstick ? What elements are our lips in contact with? Not all lipsticks are the same. There are those that contain natural and/or chemical substances and lipsticks that, boasting certifications for natural and/or organic cosmetics, usually do not contain substances of chemical origin. Having made this first distinction, we can say that all lipsticks are composed of a variable mix of these substances: natural and synthetic oils, shea butter, cocoa butter, resins and waxes of various origins, mineral and natural pigments, antioxidants, perfume and, in some lipsticks, silicones. Have you tried Rouge Pur Couture by Yves Saint Laurent ? They are bright, vibrant and with vivid colors, like the sound of music that never ends.
2) What does the texture depend on? The texture, matte or glossy, depends on the type of oils and waxes that make up the formula. Usually a matte lipstick is a mix of light, low viscosity and very volatile oils, combined with high-performance and rigid waxes. Glossy and semi-gloss lipsticks, on the other hand, contain full-bodied oils. Some are even hydrating while acting as a balm, like the Colorgel Lip Balm by Shiseido in many shades of color!
3) What are the pigments that give color to lipstick? Pigments can be natural and synthetic. Among the natural pigments, the most used are iron oxides (used for yellow, black and dull red), titanium dioxide (for white) and cochineal (for carmine red), mica and pearls. Synthetic pigments are lakes and are used to create bright shades. The shades of lipsticks, which vary with each season with the exception of some evergreen tones, are obtained by always experimenting with new mixes of different types of pigments, such as Shiseido's Lacquerink Lipshine , the high-intensity pigment meets the brightness of a gloss in this light formula that never leaves lips dry or sticky. Then there are also lipsticks with an incredibly silky texture such as Estee Lauder's Pure Color Love . Don't miss the wonderful shades of Diego Della Palma and Tom Ford lipsticks!
4) What is put in the formula to prevent a lipstick from becoming a breeding ground for bacteria? Inside lipsticks, being anhydrous products (i.e. without water), antioxidants such as vitamin E, of natural origin, are inserted.
5) Do lipsticks contain preservatives? Usually not, because preservatives are added to formulations containing water, where there is a greater risk of bacterial proliferation. Their function is to prevent the free growth of microorganisms such as mold and bacteria that would cause the degradation of the product and the onset of skin problems.
