Armocromia: what is it?
Armocromia has distant roots, in fact it was born in embryonic form at the end of the thirties, with the advent of color cinema, thanks to the work of Hollywood costume designers who began to conceive color as a beauty tool to be used to enhance actresses on a par with clothes, accessories and makeup. Also in those years, a guru of beauty trends like Elizabeth Arden introduced the Colour Harmony box, which combined shades of eye shadow and blush according to the characteristics of each woman, thus laying the foundations for the future theory of colors , as we know it today.
Concretely, color harmony takes shape in all respects from an intuition of the American image consultant and cosmetologist Bernice Kentner, who at the end of the Seventies, in the book Color Me a Season , spreads the Seasonal Theory, starting from the idea that each season has a specific light that reflects its landscape, determining tones and shades that resemble the natural colors of each woman. In this way, exploiting the aforementioned similarity, she identified 4 palettes , each of which is composed of nuances inspired by those of the 4 seasons, which, if chosen correctly, are able to enhance every femininity in a completely natural way.
How can we use Armocromia in make up?
In order to enhance every face with make-up we absolutely must not look for "the perfect color" but we must create a make-up that has the same "Chromatic Qualities" in terms of Tone, Luminosity and Brilliance that belong to each individual.
The fundamental principles of color harmony:
- Identify the “color temperature” of your skin’s undertone through precise tests and by placing various colored fabrics on your face.

Then associate the color temperature of the undertone to certain color groups called “warm and cold seasons” to find the “chromatic identity”. Generally speaking, you should have already identified whether you are a warm or cold-colored woman, so your field of interest will be limited to just two seasons; everything should then be even simpler because another distinction is light colors (summer – spring) and dark colors (autumn – winter).
The most complex part will be to recognize your own subgroup. The analysis will take into consideration:
- the chromatic value (light or dark) – spring and summer belong to the first, the other two to the second;
- undertone (warm or cold) – spring and autumn belong to the first, the other two to the second;
- intensity (high or low) – strong and bright shades on one side (winter and spring) and softer and paler on the other (the remaining ones);
