DID YOU KNOW THAT?
Contrary to popular belief, pilling is caused by use (rather than washing). As the fibers loosen, they form into balls, which tend to appear on loosely woven wools, knitted synthetics, and blends. These pills commonly occur in areas of friction, such as cuffs and where the arms rub along the sides.
They talk about wool when: there are fibers such as sheep's wool, lamb's wool, cashmere, merino, pashmina, angora, mohair, camel hair and alpaca, as well as any wool blends and wool-like synthetics made to look like wool, such as l 'acrylic.
Tumble drying is ideal for wool. Sometimes the wool looks wrinkled after washing, but you can't iron the wool. Instead, the tumble dryer (low heat) will release the creases and ruffle the yarns.
It is always important to clean wool before storing it, as perfume, body products, body oil, food and dirt can surface later and be much more difficult to get rid of.
Always...
Lay the garment on a flat surface.
Work gently in one direction using short strokes.
Discard the pill before washing.
Vittoria Profumi's advice: To use it, glide in one direction over the target areas, shake and voilà!
After washing, remove the pilling from heavier wools and thicker yarns with the sweater stone before storing them in a breathable fabric like The Laundress multipurpose bag.
NB. (For delicate knits, we opt for the sweater comb.)
Never store using plastic, cardboard, drawer liners and sticky paper, as these attract insects and encourage their reproduction.
