Soft clouds of burning copal swirling over Tulum inspire a beach scent like no other.


Incense is an olfactory thread that runs through a large part of the AEDES DE VENUSTAS collection. This millenary holocaust to the gods is at the very origin of perfumery, since the very word "perfume" derives from the Latin perumo, which translates to "through the smoke". Who better than Duchaufour to bring incense from the church into the coastal jungle?



KEY NOTE INFORMATION: Strikingly similar to frankincense, copal, whose name means "incense" in Nahuatl, can be extracted from a variety of trees native to Central and South America. And just like incense in ancient Egypt or Greece, it was burned by the Mayans and Aztecs to "feed" the gods. Today it is still used in Mexico for spiritual purposes. Since copal resin cannot be used as an ingredient in perfume, three different extractions of incense are used to conjure it from top notes to base notes, making up an extravagant 30% of the formula.


Ozonic and salty notes recall the Caribbean Sea and the local cenotes, the underground freshwater pools that dot the Yucatan peninsula. A flash of green refers to the lush Mexican jungles, cardamom peeks through the moist and woody undergrowth of patchouli and myrrh, and a touch of almond and amber-scented tonka bean, for the jaguar god of earthly fire, refers to the roundness of the copal and the burning of its embers.
